Classes, Photography

Many of you have been asking for this for quite a while and we are finally happy to say that we are beginning to offer a variety of classes!  Our first class, Digital Photography Beginner 1, is Thursday, August 1st from 6:30pm-8pm at f/32 Photo.  We will be offering classes on a variety of different topics and they will repeat on a fairly regular basis, so if you can’t make one, don’t worry, it will be scheduled again in the future.

Currently, you can find links to register for our different classes on our facebook page.  We are in the process of adding a “Classes/Events” page to our website where all class information will be posted along with links for registration.  We have started by sending out email blasts for our first two classes, but once the web page is complete, we will condense those blasts to announce weekly or biweekly offerings.

Many of our classes will be part of a series, so it is recommended that you take the different levels that are applicable to your knowledge base and where you need to start.  Chris Morris will be teaching many of our class offerings.  Chris has just recently relocated to Tennessee.  He has a B.F.A. in Graphic Design and an M.F.A. in Photography.  He attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and taught classes as part of his own school (Chris Morris School of Photography) while he was there before he moved to Brazil, where he has been living, working, and teaching for the last several years.

We will also be bringing in other photographers to teach various classes in the future, so stay tuned for some exciting offerings!  Be sure to join our mailing list, like us on facebook, or check in on our website frequently to see what is happening.

To everyone who has provided feedback on the email invitations we have sent out so far, thank you so much!  We really appreciate your thoughts and input.

Here is our class schedule for the next week along with links for more information and registration:

All of the classes listed below are $39 each and last approximately an hour and a half.

  • Thursday, August 1st 6:30-8pm – Digital Photography Beginner 1
  • Saturday, August 3rd 8:00am-9:30am – Portraiture 1
  • Wednesday, August 7th 6:30-8pm – Digital Photography Beginner 1

So, I’m sure everyone is aware of the surge in more people consciously buying local and how it affects your economy at home as opposed to ordering things online from megastores.  This is topic close to our hearts because we are that small, local company that depends on our community to make it.  We realize that means that we have to provide needed products and services with an excellent level of quality and customer service, and that is our goal.  And we aren’t trying to conquer the world, or even the country.  Our target market is Knox County and the counties surrounding us.

So, something happened this week to one of our staff members that really drove the point home regarding the benefits of working with local companies who know you.   We offer business cards and other press printed products that we outsource since we currently do not have the ability to produce them in house.  One of our providers is a huge national company with whom we have a commercial account (so we can get better rates for our customers).  So, Danielle (she gave me permission to use her name in this post) ordered a large quantity of business cards last week from the previously mentioned company.  This is what she received:

You are looking at the front and back of the card…aren’t they beautiful?  But wait, there is something missing…oh yeah, all of her contact information…you know, like her name, website, phone number, etc.  We told her that she could use these to be the really elusive photographer in Knoxville.  Kind of like, “if you can figure out who I am with this information and find a way to contact me, then I might photograph you”.  We thought she could be the photography version of The Artist formerly known as Prince.  While it was funny, she didn’t think that was such a good marketing idea.

So, whose fault was it?  The printer or Danielle?  Well, Danielle is very disciplined in naming her files, so we thought it had to be the printer.  But, alas, it wasn’t.  She had accidentally named one of her files incorrectly, resulting in her ordering cards with two backs.  One of them has strokes around the images and one doesn’t, but they are both the back side, just the same.

After we got through laughing, it came up how if we had been able to print those in house, that would not have happened.  Not just because she works here, but because when we see something that we think may not be quite right, we will call the customer and try to fix the problem on the front end.  We received an order for one page calendars not too long ago with an image on the bottom of each one.  When I printed out a test print, I could tell that the image had not been properly inserted because it was stretched and distorted.  So, we called the photographer so she could fix it instead of us printing 60 calendar pages that she would ultimately not be pleased with.  How many of us have not managed to hold down the shift key when resizing something and not noticed because we are in a hurry or exhausted?  I’m pretty sure I have.  Anyway, the point being that one of the great benefits of being small is that we also get to be more personal and develop a closer relationship with our customers.  I’m not trying to say anything negative about the commercial printer we used, for they are really large and they have measures in place that offer you the ability to try and catch your own mistakes, but they cannot feasibly do it for you and we completely understand that.  Even being small and local, we won’t catch every mistake that someone might make, but if we do, we will do our best to notify them and help them fix it.

So, hope you got a laugh out of this and another reason to shop local:)  Oh, and I promised Danielle a shameless plug for her business facebook page in return for using her name and story here.  So, if you aren’t already a fan of Danielle Evans Photography, head on over to her page here.  She does really nice work:)

Bear with us as we catch you up on how 2011 ended! There is a plethora of things to tell you about!

First off, there are our wonderful Santa sessions! During the month of December you may have noticed a jolly man in a red suit wandering around the lab. No, it isn’t Wilson in town for a visit, he is actually our wonderful Santa! We are so blessed to have the BEST Santa anywhere, the REAL Santa. Well, as far as we are concerned anyway. We had a record number of little ones pay him a visit this year. Each one having an experience you can find in few other places. Aside from our one of a kind Santa, the other thing that sets us apart, is the entire experience a child has when coming here. There is a private comfortable environment where children are at ease to get acquainted with the man in the red suit and tell them all their wishes! They have the opportunity to read a story with Santa and then each one receives a treat as they leave! This is by far one of my favorite times of the year with all those smiling faces (although not without a tear here or there) but knowing how many memories were made definitely keeps a smile on my face!

Next up is an event that we have had the pleasure to be a part of for many years (dating back to pre-f/32). Santa at Franklin Square is a fun family event where children have the opportunity to climb into Santa’s sleigh and be photographed as well as put in their requests.  It is an all day affair, perfect for families to spend the day in Christmas cheer as they walk around the shopping center.  Children’s activities, puppet shows, choir singers, face painting and even a horse drawn carriage creates and atmosphere that will keep you coming back year after year.

And lastly, we were invited to participate in Dog Days at Ijams Nature Center. Lots of owners and their puppies stopped by to have a portrait made while exploring with other vendors and meeting new folks.  Ijams Nature Center has decided to partner with Poo Prints, a green initiative helping improve local air and water quality to create a cleaner and greener community, and this was the perfect launch opportunity!  In 2011 we were very fortunate to develop a fabulous relationship with the people at Ijams and take part in several of their events! Hopefully we will have more opportunities to join in their fun events this year!

So to recap, we had a very busy end of 2011 and are anticipating a lot of greatness for 2012! Enjoy the images below collected from our various ventures over the last few months!

A big thanks to everyone who was a part of making 2011 a HUGE success!

Everyone at the Studio at f/32 Photo is excited to launch the first of several events this fall!

First up is the Ijams Nature Center Fall Plant Sale and Festival!  F/32 Photo will have a booth and will be taking fall pictures and selling 5×7 prints on site.  We are donating 20% of our profits back to the Ijams Nature Center.

Ijams Nature Center Plant Sales encourage the use of native species in our own backyards with in turn help sustain East Tennessee’s natural beauty.  As an additional plus, these plants require less maintenance!  The Fall Plant Sale includes other great craft booths, gardening workshops, kids’s activities, live music, food, and more!  What a great way to spend a Sunday with the Family!

So come on out, walk around, and don’t forget to get your picture taken this Sunday Oct 2nd from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m at Ijams Nature Center.

Check back later for more information on our Halloween Costume Contest at the Studio at f/32!

So we are shaking things up a little bit this week! Pro Print of the Week is a little more like Pro Product of the Week. We always get so excited when our customers have new and exciting ventures in their businesses and well, Memories Portraits is at it again! This past weekend was their grand opening at the Turkey Creek Public Market!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the market it is an indoor/outdoor venue located off of Lovell Rd with over 700 vendor booths available. Everything from antiques and local craftspeople to area liquidations to great food can be found at this convenient West Knoxville location. Rumor has it, if you are looking for it, someone there will have it!

Now, you may be wondering, “what goes on at the Memories Portraits booth?”. Well, their booth is set up as a point of visual attraction and information. Their brightly colored frames and accessories, as well as their captivating portraits, will catch the eye of the passers by and once they approach the booth there is information available on the services they offer. While Nancy, Heather and Michelle won’t be there every Fri, Sat and Sun from 8-5 while the market is open you can expect to find them there for special occasions and anticipated busy weekends. But, when they are there you can bet they will be sporting their custom designed (by Heather) and f/32 made name tags.

Many of you may not be aware that we offer buttons and magnets. It is a product we added within the last year and is something we are very excited about. Pricing for these are available upon request depending on quantity and will be made available online in the very near future. While typically sports teams are the bulk reason for the buttons there are many other creative ways to make use of these products. These ladies are always encouraging me to think outside the box and I hope they do the same for you!

Congratulations on your grand opening! We wish you much success! Don’t forget to check out their booth if you are in the area! They can be located just down from O.P Jenkins and Bennett Galleries! For a sneak peek of the booth check out their facebook page!

With school starting back the buzz of senior portraits is all around. While a tradition dating back nearly a hundred years, to the early 1920’s, the evolution has changed significantly. The tradition started as a simple portrait, then turned to a formal portrait with the tuxedo jacket for males and the drapes for females and in more recent decades the cap and gown shot was added. Now, the possibilities are endless. A student in today’s society looks forward to this event in their lives as a chance to capture who they have become thus far in their lives. Incorporating their hobbies as well as anything else that represents them at this very point into a modern day senior session is what helps a photographer to reach that goal. Today we are showcasing one very talented photographer who captured the beauty of a senior girl. I am sure these are memories to be cherished by her and her loved ones for many years to come. Congratulations Sondra Eikenberry of Sondra Kay Photography for winning Pro Print of the Week.

Thanks Sondra for sending your order! Everyone keep submitting those orders and you could be our next winner!

This year was the first annual Photography Kids Camp held by the Professional Photographers of East Tennessee and everyone at f/32 Photo was thrilled to be a part of it!

The camp was split into two age groups and were taught camera basics, lighting, and composition by Colby McLemore and Jerry Godolphin, both renowned photographers and excellent teachers!  Julie Poole, highly sought after advertising photographer in the equestrian and dog show world, taught a fun lesson on pet photography with her own whippet, Cinnamon, as the perfect model!  Fleetwood Photo supplied each camper with a spiral notebook for notes.  The camp was featured on WBIR’s Live at 5 at 4:00 with our special guest teacher, Erin Donovon, who spoke about the color of light, design aspects, and what makes a good print.  Carla Hoskins, another award winning photographer, did a fantastic job organizing this event!

After a lunch break, the kids got to participate in their own Photo Safari, where they were allowed to submit images to the 8×10 Print Competition.  The campers had the run of the area and were challenged to capture images that fit into one of five categories: Portrait, Pet, Architecture, Macro, or Creative.  We were all thoroughly impressed and humbled by the work that was produced by all of these future photographers!

Make sure you check back for a link to the PPETN blog for the winning images to be posted!

The kids had to have a little teamwork for the Portrait Category and Cinnamon loved the camera!

Checking out all the angles!

Colby jumped right in as a model for the posing section!  Great moves!

A special thanks goes out to everyone that helped make this such a fantastic camp!  We can’t wait until next year!
